Mental Health Day: Why Prioritizing Mental Health Matters

October 10th marks a very significant day for everyone around the world, it is National Mental Health Day. This is a designated day to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma, and encourage people to take care of their emotional and psychological well-being. Unlike physical health, mental health is often overlooked, even though it affects how we think, feel, and act in daily life.

University students face a wide range of pressures such as academic deadlines, social commitments, and the uncertainty of planning for the future which can all cause mental health difficulties. It’s no surprise that many students experience heightened stress, anxiety, and burnout. Mental Health Day serves as a reminder to pause, reflect, and care for our emotional well-being.

Research shows that even brief breaks and intentional self-care can improve focus, motivation, and overall mental resilience. By acknowledging mental health as a priority, universities create space for students to recharge and maintain balance in their daily lives.

Strategies to Support Your Mental Health:

  • Take regular breaks: Step away from studies to rest or engage in a hobby.

  • Stay connected: Reach out to friends, family, or campus support groups.

  • Practice mindfulness: Meditation, deep breathing, or journaling can reduce stress.

  • Seek professional support: Counselling services are available on campus for confidential guidance.

  • Set realistic goals: Break tasks into smaller steps to manage workload effectively.

Remember, taking care of your mental health is important as it’s essential for academic success and personal growth.
